Country of origin labelling

Even before the frozen berries crisis, Greens leader Christine Milne had re-introduced legislation for mandatory Country of Origin Labelling to parliament. The aim of the bill is to eliminate confusion about where the ingredients of a product were grown rather than where they were processed, allowing consumers to make informed decisions about the origin of the food they buy. In the wake of the frozen berries and an imported tuna scare, Prime Minister Tony Abbott has asked Industry Minister Ian McFarlane and Agriculture Minister Barnaby Joyce to prepare a submission for Cabinet as a piority. Supported by local farmers, consumer groups and producers, AusVeg has said a system that highlights both the country of origin of ingredients and the country where they were processed, if not scuttled by big business, would be the best way to help Australian consumers.
