Imported food safety measures

The Australian Federal Government says it will be strengthening the country’s food safety system as part of the 2017–18 Federal Budget. This comes after biosecurity issues such as the importation of white spot prawn disease in 2016 which has damaged the Australian prawn industry.

The Government says there will be more responsibility on importers to source safe food. This will require them to have documented evidence that they are using internationally recognised food safety controls. Appropriate authorities will also be given additional powers to monitor and manage new and emerging risks to the country’s food safety.
